Last month, State Superintendent Chris Reykdal introduced a new proposal aimed at strengthening senior‑year preparation across Washington. In addition to the existing 0.5‑credit civics requirement, he is recommending an added semester‑long course called the Senior Year Postsecondary Launch Course. This class would guide students through essential steps such as building résumés, completing financial aid forms, submitting job or college applications, registering to vote, and developing financial literacy skills. Governor Ferguson has also supported the idea by proposing that all seniors complete the FAFSA applcation, regardless of their post‑graduation plans.
At EAS, we are proud to say that we already meet—and exceed—these goals through our Senior Seminar. In this course, seniors work closely with a teacher to explore postsecondary options, write application essays, complete the Common App, and submit college and program applications before winter break. Students also participate in a career exploration project, complete a job shadow, and design an independent project from the ground up. This class has proven invaluable in helping students think intentionally about life after high school, ask meaningful questions, explore opportunities, and feel more confident about their next steps.
Looking ahead, EAS will launch a new 11th‑grade program for the 2026–2027 school year. This new program will be integrated into the English classes. It will introduce key skills earlier, encouraging juniors to visit college campuses, build résumés, practice job‑interview techniques, and begin exploring future pathways.
As a college‑prep school, our mission is to equip students with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills they need to thrive beyond high school. We are excited to continue expanding programs that support their success.
