Our Mission
At Eastside Academics School, it is our mission to prepare students for success in college and their lives beyond. We believe all students deserve to be taught in the way that they learn best, and we strive to help foster a sense of capability, determination, resilience and a love of learning in every student. We do this by providing a personalized education plan tailored to each student’s needs that capitalizes on small class settings, independent worktime, flexible school hours, dual enrollment opportunities, coaching in study coaching strategies and immersive engagement with ideas and concepts both in and out of the classroom.
Our Story
We were founded in 1980 by Sherrill O’Shaughnessy, an early pioneer in special education in the public school system. As a former high school teacher, Sherrill saw the need to catch students who fall through the cracks of an inflexible education system by offering individualized education tailored to the unique needs and abilities of every student. From the beginning, Sherrill sought to build a community where all students from any background could discover a passion for learning and build the skills they would need to succeed in college and beyond.
Since we opened our doors, we have evolved to meet the changing and growing needs of our academic community. We offer middle and high school classes, dual enrollment and distance learning options, tutoring, college advising and ACT/SAT test prep courses. We are also committed to providing access to our services to all students, and so we offer scholarships and tuition assistance to all who need it.
Today, under the direction of Sherrill’s daughter Jennifer Vice, we are a dynamic and diverse academic community that reflects the original vision from 1980. In January 2017 we became a non-profit organization in order to be better positioned to deliver on our original mission: to provide personalized, college prep education for all.
